A proper service call starts with identifying the circuit and confirming what the receptacle should protect. The electrician will usually test the existing outlet, inspect the wiring, and determine whether the issue is a failed device, a wiring fault, or something happening further upstream or downstream.

If replacement is the right solution, the new GFCI should be installed with the correct line and load connections, tested under normal conditions, and labelled if it protects additional outlets. If the box is overcrowded, the wiring is damaged, or the grounding is questionable, those issues should be addressed rather than ignored.

In some cases, a GFCI breaker may be the better choice than an individual receptacle. That depends on access, panel condition, circuit layout, and what level of protection makes the most practical sense. This is one of those it-depends decisions where the right answer comes from the actual site conditions, not a generic rule.

Cost, convenience, and long-term value

Most people want to know whether this is a small repair or a bigger electrical job. The answer depends on what is found once the circuit is checked. A simple replacement in a modern, properly wired box is usually more affordable than a call involving hidden faults, outdated wiring, moisture damage, or multiple protected outlets that have lost power.

Still, this is generally not an area where cutting corners pays off. A miswired GFCI can create false confidence. You think the outlet is protecting people when it is not. On the other hand, a correctly installed and tested device adds real safety value with very little disruption.

That is especially true in rental properties, busy family homes, and commercial spaces where different people use the same outlets every day. Reliability matters. So does clear communication about what was fixed, what was tested, and whether any follow-up work is recommended.
